A garden pond brings so much to a home. For one, it increases a property’s value as it improves its aesthetic appeal as well. It is also an effective stress reliever which contributes to a person’s overall health. Taking care of the pond and its aquatic life is also considered to be therapeutic. Creating your own outdoor pond can be a means of expressing one’s creativity. Despite all its benefits, however, producing backyard fish ponds is not as simple as it may seem. You will need to spend time, money, and energy to its construction as well as its maintenance. You will need a good garden pond kit to have everything managed. If you are up to the challenge, here are the basic steps and instructions on how to build your own small ponds.

What type of pond do you want to build?
There are factors that you need to consider in this step.

What type of aquatic life will you put in the pond?

Water gardens basically contain goldfishes and a variety of pond plants. The area should be at least two feet deep in places with moderate climate and at least twelve to sixteen inches of water below the freeze zone in colder climates.

Water stabilizer
Water pump
Water garden liners
Shovel or a back hoe depending on the size of the pond.
Electrical cord
Stones
Chalk

The construction
Start with your excavation. For smaller water features, three to five feet is the ideal depth. Dig the soil to the shape of the pond you have in mind. If you are going to keep plants, see to it that you dig a shelf around the perimeter that is at least a foot deep and wide.
Place the external pond filters and level it to its location. Burry the pond skimmers beside the pond. Dig another ditch for the plumbing.
Before placing the pond liner, place a pond underlayment first and tape the small pieces together to stop it from moving. The liner should be placed evenly in the pond and avoid folds and wrinkles as much as possible.

The Pumps
There are tubs that have pump outlet holes for cords and tubes. You can hide them among the plants and keep them in place with washed stones.

The Plants
Consistency on your choice of plants will not only help your pond aesthetically. It will save you money and effort as well. Ferns are obviously not a good idea for dry climates and so are cacti in wet forest areas.
